In partnership with the Parks Department, the New York Restoration Project
(NYRP) is leading MillionTreesNYC. Founded by Bette Midler in 1995, NYRP is
a non-profit organization dedicated to reclaiming and restoring under-resourced
parks, community gardens, and open spaces in economically disadvantaged neighborhoods
throughout NYC’s five boroughs.
NYRP has accomplished dramatic results by investing in NYC’s open spaces
and diverse communities. Since its founding, NYRP staff and volunteers
have raised more than $70 million and planted over 100,000 trees and shrubs
to support the restoration of parks and public spaces; removed more than 925
tons of garbage and debris from project sites totaling more than 400 acres;
saved 114 community gardens from commercial development; transformed an illegal
dumping ground into the five-acre Swindler Cove Park and Peter Jay Sharp Boathouse;
and served NYC families and over 10,000 at-risk youth through environmental
education programs and events.
In partnership with national and community-based organizations, researchers,
educators, policy-makers, government agencies, corporations, and individuals,
New York Restoration Project and its 12,000 members work everyday to revitalize,
support, and advocate for NYC’s public parks, community gardens, green
spaces, and urban forest.
