Million Trees NYC - A PlaNYC initiative with NYC Parks and New York Restoration Project
Partners and Sponsors: Department of Parks & Recreation

The Parks Department is the historic caretaker of New York City’s public trees, and in partnership with the New York Restoration Project is leading the MillionTreesNYC initiative - one part of Mayor Bloomberg’s PlaNYC to make our City greener and more sustainable by the year 2030. With 1,700 parks, playgrounds, and recreation facilities, and a total of 29,000 acres of parkland under its care, the Parks Department is responsible for greening and maintaining the City’s public open spaces.

Under the Parks Department’s stewardship are the City’s 600,000 street trees and 2 million park trees, which account for half of NYC’s total tree population. Through the 2006 Tree Census, the Parks Department identified 220,000 street-tree planting opportunities. As a result of PlaNYC funding, the Parks Department will receive approximately $390 million over the next ten years to plant all 220,000 street trees, create 800 new Greenstreets, and reforest 2,000 acres of parkland.

Through joint programs with non-profit groups and private foundations - such as NYRP - the Parks Department provides essential greening services for city residents, including:

  • Trees for Public Health - a tree-planting program that targets neighborhoods with low tree canopy coverage and high asthma rates.
  • Greenstreets - a joint project of the Parks Department and the Department of Transportation that has converted over 2,200 paved street triangles and malls into greenspace.
  • GreenThumb - the largest community gardening program in the country.
  • Natural Resources Group —preserves the City’s remaining woodlands, wetlands, and meadows.
  • GreenApple Corps, an AmeriCorps program concentrating on environmental restoration and urban forestry stewardship and education.
  • Partnerships for Parks —to increases community support for and involvement in parks throughout New York City.

With a renewed focus on greening, there are more opportunities than ever to enjoy one of the largest and most valued urban park systems in the nation.
