Parks foresters and youth from the Phipps Community Development Corporation yesterday planted trees on public streets in Morrisania as part of Greening Morrisania, a joint project between Partnerships for Parks and the New York Tree Trust in which nearly 500 trees will be planted to increase the canopy cover in an area with disproportionate health burdens such as asthma.
This fall, nearly 50 trees were planted along six blocks, and additional trees are scheduled to be planted in the area next year.
The trees will count towards MillionTreesNYC, Mayor
Bloomberg’s PlaNYC initiative to plant and care for one million trees throughout
the five boroughs by 2017. Free tree stewardship programs are also being offered to the community to foster environmental awareness.
Greening Morrisania is funded by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).
