Million Trees NYC - A PlaNYC initiative with NYC Parks and New York Restoration Project
press release

Our Lady Queen of Martyrs School and Parks Foresters Jose Baez ('86) Spruce up Inwood Hill Park in MillionTreesNYC Effort

A group of student volunteers replacing native vegetation

Through MillionTreesNYC, Parks' Natural Resources Group Forestry Crew Member Jose Baez led 8th grade students from his alma mater, Our Lady Queen of Martyrs School, in a forest restoration project in Inwood Hill Park. The student volunteers learned how to identify and remove invasive species which out compete and replace native vegetation, resulting in the loss of native plant species which provide habitat for wildlife.

As part of MillionTreesNYC, a component of Mayor Bloomberg's PlaNYC initiative to create a sustainable New York City, the City will plant and care for one million trees throughout the five boroughs by 2017. Through education and volunteer opportunities, MillionTreesNYC is engaging all New Yorkers to plant, protect, and care for trees in the City's urban forest.
