VOLUNTEERS TO PLANT 20,000 TREES IN PARKS

Hands On New York Day  is the largest single-day tree planting effort In NYC History

More than 6,500 volunteers from New York Cares will spruce up parks, gardens and community spaces in all five boroughs during the 14th annual Hands on New York Day, sponsored by HSBC Bank.  Of that number, more than 1,050 volunteers will be planting 20,000 trees – the most number of trees ever planted in New York City on a single day.

By Mayoral proclamation, April is MillionTreesNYC Month.  Coinciding with the beginning of spring, it aims to raise public awareness and involve New Yorkers in MillionTreesNYC, a public-private partnership between the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation and Bette Midler’s New York Restoration Project, through which one million trees will be planted and cared for throughout the five boroughs by 2017. 

Tree planting sites on Saturday, April 12 will include:

BRONX

Bronx River - French Charlies   (north of baseball fields at East 204th St.)
Hunter Island – Orchard Beach   (northeast corner of parking lot)
New York Botanical Gardens   (Moshulu Gate entrance)
Pelham Bay Park  (east of Burr Avenue)
Van Cortlandt Park   (between museum and pool, by grand staircase)

BROOKLYN
Canarsie Park   (102nd Street and Seaview Avenue)

MANHATTAN
Fort Washington Park   (Dyckman Street and Staff Street)
Riverside Park   (143rd Street and Riverside Drive)

QUEENS
Forest Park   (Park Lane South and Myrtle Avenue)
Idlewild   (Springfield Blvd. and Rockaway – enter at Springfield Lane)
Kissena Park   (56th Road and 142nd Street)

STATEN ISLAND
Chapin Woods   (between Todt Hill Road and Richmond Road)
Conference House   (Swinnerton Street and Billop Avenue)
