The Mysterious Fall-Flowering Tree
In the springtime our parks are aglow with beautiful wildflowers and colorful blossoming trees, such as the familiar cherries and magnolias.  However, some of our native plants wait until the fall to bloom, including one small tree found throughout the parks of New York City.  The common witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) starts to flower when its leaves turn yellow and begin to drop. NYRP’s Cherry Tree Project Keeps Growing!
In May 2007, motorists on the Harlem River Drive slowed down to take in a spectacular new sight—a sea of pink, white and red blossoming trees along the waterfront. On October 26, Million Trees NYC came to Harlem. Parks planted a Japanese zelkova tree, the first of thirty trees being planted along Third Ave and 108th Street.
