Tadashi Kawamata: Tree Huts
The Madison Square Park Conservancy's Mad. Sq. Art program presents Tadashi Kawamata: Tree Huts, an artist-in-residency program culminating in a site-specific installation of eighteen wooden huts built in the trees of historic Madison Square Park in Manhattan's Flatiron district. Save the Date! Free Compost Available
NYC Residents can receive unlimited amounts of free, high-quality compost this fall. The compost is made from leaves that the Department of Sanitation collects from City residents each fall. Adding compost to backyards, gardens, and parks improves soil quality, increases plant growth, and reduces the need for chemical fertilizers and watering. Read more and/or link here.

MillionTreesNYC Stewards in Action
On July 19, volunteers organized by NYC Parks and Green Apple Corps helped maintain New York City's new green neighbors by participating in a volunteer tree stewardship day. Although temperatures were over 100 degrees, volunteers and Parks staff put in a major effort to care for more than 16,000 young trees in Kissena Corridor in Queens, Canarsie and Four Sparrow Marsh in Brooklyn, and Ferry Point Park in the Bronx. Thursday June 19th was not a typical Thursday for some of the students at East New York’s Intermediary School 171, located in one of our Trees for Public Health Neighborhoods. New Trees Planted at P.S. 96 Move City Closer to Million Tree Goal
Manhattan Parks Commissioner Bill Castro, Senator Bill Perkins, Assemblyman Adam Clayton Powell, IV, Council Member Melissa Mark-Viverito, Chair of Community Board 11 Robert Rodriguez and students from P.S. 96 planted a ceremonial tree on May 30th to celebrate 23 new trees planted on 120th street next to the school, as part of the City’s MillionTreesNYC initiative. The Police Initiate $2 Million Contribution to MillionTreesNYC
Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg joined Sting, Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland of The Police to announce a pledge of $1 million in support of MillionTreesNYC. The donation, matched by the City, will provide $2 million that will plant 10,000 trees and help launch the reforestation component of MillionTreesNYC, which will reforest 2,000 acres of parkland across the five boroughs. Mayor Bloomberg and David Rockefeller Announce $10 Million Commitment Towards MillionTreesNYC
Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and David Rockefeller today announced their joint pledge of $10 million to the MillionTreesNYC initiative to plant trees in public spaces including New York Housing Authority (NYCHA) developments and at City schools. This donation of private funds made to the Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City by Mr. Rockefeller and Bloomberg Philanthropies will allow over 18,000 trees to be planted throughout the five boroughs. 20,000 Trees Planted in New York City
More than 6,500 volunteers from New York Cares spruced up parks, gardens and community spaces in all five boroughs during the 14th annual Hands on New York Day, sponsored by HSBC Bank. The Mysterious Fall-Flowering Tree
In the springtime our parks are aglow with beautiful wildflowers and colorful blossoming trees, such as the familiar cherries and magnolias.  However, some of our native plants wait until the fall to bloom, including one small tree found throughout the parks of New York City.  The common witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) starts to flower when its leaves turn yellow and begin to drop. NYRP’s Cherry Tree Project Keeps Growing!
In May 2007, motorists on the Harlem River Drive slowed down to take in a spectacular new sight—a sea of pink, white and red blossoming trees along the waterfront.
