Million Trees NYC - A PlaNYC initiative with NYC Parks and New York Restoration Project
MillionTreesNYC Stewards in Action

On July 19, volunteers organized by NYC Parks and Green Apple Corps helped maintain New York City’s new green neighbors by participating in a volunteer tree stewardship day. Although temperatures were over 100 degrees, volunteers and Parks staff put in a major effort to care for more than 16,000 young trees in Kissena Corridor in Queens, Canarsie and Four Sparrow Marsh in Brooklyn, and Ferry Point Park in the Bronx. All of these young trees were planted as part of MillionTreesNYC last year.

Volunteer tree stewards in Canarsie, BrooklynWeeds and invasive plant species were removed from around the trees and much needed water was provided. In Queens, Assembly Woman Ellen Young stopped by to lend support to the Stewardship effort. By assisting in the maintenance of our city’s newly planted trees, participants not only learned about tree stewardship, but they were also instrumental in ensuring that New York City’s most crucial inhabitants grow strong and healthy for generations to come!

More stewardship is needed for the MillionTrees planted in natural areas. If you are interested in volunteering to help care for some of the MillionTrees planted over the last year, please visit our community calendar for upcoming stewardship workshops and events.  We also invite you to visit our tree planting and care section for helpful hints on how to take care of our City’s trees.
