Thursday June 19th was not a typical Thursday for some of the students at East New York’s Intermediary School 171, located in one of our Trees for Public Health Neighborhoods. Four educators from City Parks Foundation presented the Seeds to Trees program to more than 50 students in grades five through seven.
The program gave an overview of the MillionTreesNYC initiative and engaged the students in understanding why trees matter in our urban environment. The students learned how to care for their neighborhood’s newly planted trees including watering, keeping pits clean and ready for growth, and recognizing signs of poor health.
The students also took part in a tree identification scavenger hunt and some of them pledged to take care of their tree by writing their names on a MillionTreesNYC tag. We wished them a great summer recess and we reminded them to water their trees so they can stand strong for their graduation days!
