Grow Our Grassroots Summit
As part of the ongoing work to engage New Yorkers in the City's long-term sustainability program, on Saturday, February 11, the City of New York convened the first-ever PlaNYC summit to make sustainability a part of local communities. Hundreds of participants throughout the five boroughs attended the Grow Our Grassroots summit to learn how neighborhoods can take an active role in the initiatives for a greener, greater New York. MillionTreesNYC Hosts Green Points Challenge for NYC schools
MillionTreesNYC, in partnership with Recyclebank, has started the spring semester of the Green Points Challenge! New York City educators (grades K-12) are encouraged to get their classrooms involved in this citywide environmental initiative which will run through April 30. Read more

Tree Stewardship is Big News in 2011
Communities across the New York City show their commitment to tree care! From a promotional event in Jackson Heights with Councilmember Daniel Dromm and a watering event with Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe in Astoria to a community tree care in Richmond Terrace and a call to adopt trees as a New Years’ resolution in Castleton Corners, MillionTreesNYC stresses the importance of stewardship in the outer boroughs.

New Yorkers Plant 20,000 Trees Citywide: Planting Day Renamed To Honor Nobel Prize-winning Environmental Leader
On October 22, 2011 and during the following week, approximately 2,000 volunteers from all five boroughs planted 20,000 trees in parks and natural areas through MillionTreesNYC. This year's tree planting day honored Wangari Maathai, Nobel Peace Prize winner and founder of the Green Belt Movement, who passed away this year. The fall planting day has also been renamed the Wangari Maathai Volunteer Tree Planting Day. Read more

Mayor Bloomberg Plants 500,000th Tree to Celebrate Halfway Mark of MillionTreesNYC
Mayor Bloomberg today celebrated the halfway mark of the MillionTreesNYC initiative by planting the 500,000th tree, a Pin Oak, at Saint Nicholas Park in Harlem. MillionTreesNYC is a public-private partnership between the City of New York and New York Restoration Project that aims to plant one million trees throughout the five boroughs by 2017. Read more

Over 1500 Volunteers Help Plant Trees in New York City Parks
On Saturday, April 30, more than 900 volunteers at Marine Park in Brooklyn to plant 10,000 trees and 2,000 shrubs at the MillionTreesNYC Spring Planting Day. Other parks hosting planting events on Saturday were: Cunningham Park and Kissena Park in Queens; Wolfe's Pond Park and Conference House Park in Staten Island; and Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx. Over the course of the day, more than 20,000 trees were planted citywide. Read more
