Summer

New York University Students Care for 1,862 Trees in East New York

On August 31 and September 1, MillionTreesNYC and NYC Parks were joined by over 1,300 incoming New York University Freshmen who helped care for a grand total of 1,862 street trees in East New York!


Spring

April 25 Stewardship Day

On April 25, MillionTreesNYC engaged 401 volunteers in planting over 700 young forest trees and caring for thousands more existing forest trees in natural areas of parks during our third citywide Stewardship Day!


MillionTreesNYC, NY Knicks, and PwC Plant Trees in Alley Pond Park

On April 16, NYC Parks and PwC teamed up with the New York Knicks on Thursday to plant 3,500 trees and 1,050 shrubs in Alley Pond Park in Queens!

2014 Maathai Award Winners

Congratulations to Eric Wong and Nicolle Martinez on winning the 2014 Wangari Maathai Award for Civic Participation in Sustainability!


October 25, 2014 Stewardship Day
On October 25, MillionTreesNYC engaged 495 volunteers in planting over 1,200 young forest trees and caring for thousands more existing forest trees in natural areas of parks during our second citywide Stewardship Day!

MillionTreesNYC and the United Nations Celebrate Mandela Day

On July 18 volunteers from the United Nations, Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, and several other dignitaries joined MTNYC in caring for street trees in Manhattan during Mandela Day 2014.


New York University Students Care for 1,562 Trees in East New York

On August 26 and 27, MillionTreesNYC and NYC Parks were joined by over 1,500 incoming New York University Freshmen who helped care for a grand total of 1,562 street trees in East New York!


Spring

Return of the "Great Tree" Clones

On May 1, NYC Parks, the New York Tree Trust, and MillionTreesNYC joined the TREE Fund, Van Cortlandt Park Conservancy, Bartlett Tree Experts, Schichtels Nursery Oregon and John Bowne High School to plant clones from two historic "mother" trees in Van Cortlandt Park. The white ash (Fraxinus americana) and crack willow (Salix fragilis) saplings represent two of eleven different tree species from 25 trees of historical and environmental significance that have been cloned as part of an initiative to preserve and protect New York City's historic trees.


April 26 Forest Tree Stewardship Event

On April 26, MillionTreesNYC and NYC Parks Natural Areas Volunteers worked with over 500 volunteers to care for thousands of young forest trees at Pelham Bay, Van Cortlandt, Alley, Marine, and Conference House Parks during the first citywide spring reforestation tree care event.


MillionTreesNYC, the NY Knicks, and PwC Plant Trees in Jamaica Bay Park

On April 10 volunteers from the NY Knicks, PwC, and PS 161 helped plant 1,500 new trees in Jamaica Bay Park as part of the "Trees4Threes" Program where young trees were funded for every 3-point shot scored by Knicks players!

MillionTreesNYC: The Integration of Research and Practice

NYC Parks and the US Forest Service have collaborated to produce a new report meant to illustrate the relevant research that helped to substantiate, inform, or measure the campaign since its inception.


Grow Our Grassroots 2014

On March 15, MillionTreesNYC hosted the third annual "Grow Our Grassroots" summit, a day-long event organized to inspire and recognize local environmental stewardship efforts. Check out the presentations and resources provided during the event.

800,000th Tree Planted in Governor's Island Park

On November 14, Mayor Michael. R. Bloomberg and other local officials helped plant the 800,000th tree in the MillionTreesNYC campaign on Governor's Island.


Far Rockaway Tree Planting Effort Has Sandy Roots

MillionTreesNYC, NYC Parks, the NFL, the NY/NJ Superbowl Committee, Verizon, and over 1,400 volunteers helped to plant more than 20,000 trees in Rockaway Community Park on October 19!


Bronx trees gets some 'Tree-L-C' at Pelham Bay Park

Volunteers from helped to clear out weeds and other invasive plants near Orchard Beach during "Building Young Forests" event in partnership with the NY/NJ Super Bowl Host Committee and the NFL!
